Carl Rogers and Person Centred Counselling in Dunfermline

When I was at school I didn’t learn about emotions or emotional resilience.

I went to school in the 80s and at that time emotional wellness was not a subject that was particularly acknowledged. The first time I was in an environment where emotions/behaviour patterns were discussed was from the angle of illness during my training as a mental health nurse. Naturally during this course emotions were patholigised and talked about from the angle of disorder.

It was later when I became interested in counselling and group work that the world opened in the direction of our human process and how it is to feel human. The wonderful concept that as a human it is understandable and healthy to have a range of emotion similar to the weather systems here in scotland. We might not like rain but it really is essential when it comes to our long term survival.

It was at this time that I first became aware of the inspring work of Carl Rogers the founder of the Person Centred Counselling approach and I was hooked in love with this way and knew it would be the foundation for my future work.

Carl Rogers believed that for a person to grow they need an environment that provides acceptance, empathy and genuineness. Being listened to and understood.

He believed that the experience of being understood and valued gives us the freedom to grow.

It is a huge privilege for me to be able to create the quiet safe space in my therapy room that gives you the opportunity to explore your inner compass and where it is pointing for you.

Using my counselling service you have the opportunity to step outside your life looking in and reflect on what is happening for you. Perhaps you might like to talk about the emotions that you are experiencing, which are entirely appropriate for the situation you find yourself in.
